The most pressing threat in Europe comes, once again, from Greece. Snap elections in January remain a possibility, with polls showing the anti-austerity Syriza party poised to sweep into power. Although the party has moderated its previous calls to tear up the bailout agreement, a Syriza government would likely create a new source of anxiety.

Alexis Tsipras may not be the firebrand he once was, but he will be prime minister very soon and he will spark a new Greek debt crisis,” wrote Stephen Pope, managing director at Spotlight Ideas. “Whether or not Greece will leave the eurozone is a debatable point. I will say that the through-the-night meetings in Brussels will be back on the agenda as the elite move heaven and earth to contain the debt crisis.”
