"...The French auction followed the U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech Wednesday that gave more insight into the possible timing for scaling down the U.S. monthly $85 billion asset purchasing program. His announcement in May that the Fed may soon start tapering the program has been the most important mover in government bond markets in recent weeks.

Economists said Mr. Bernanke's wording was clearer than before as he suggested the Fed is likely to gradually scale down purchases later this year, possibly from September, and phase them out completely by mid-2014.

"Even if the acquisition is slowed... it does not imply that the market will suddenly find that the Fed has switched from being an asset buyer into an asset seller," said Stephen Pope, managing partner at Spotlight Ideas, a U.K.-based research company.

"There will be no deluge of paper onto the secondary market," Mr. Pope said, adding that it would be better for investors to give Mr. Bernanke more credit than they currently appear to.  ..."
